The Calgary Stampede unveiled the 2011 Calgary Stampede parade marshal today and the prestigious honour goes to.. Canadian icon Rick Hansen.
So who is Rick Hansen? Some of you may already know him as the hero who wheelchaired around the world in the mid-1980s to raise funds for spinal cord injury research. He raised more than $200 million for his foundation. For a man that wheeled around the world.. the Calgary Stampede parade route would be no problem.
"If I wheeled around the world I figured I'd better get on my chair and wheel the parade route and ask some folks to join me," Hansen said.
Hansen is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his Man In Motion Tour this August with a 12,000-kilometre fundraising trek across the country, one in which thousands of Canadians are expected to participate.
So what happen to the rumor of Prince William & Kate Middleton taking up the prestigious role of marshal's? Stampede officials said the royal couple was invited to be guests at the parade, but no reply has yet come back from London.
Personally I think the Royal couple will somehow be a part of the Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth in some way...as I reported earlier, the Royal couple's agendas wouldn't be confirmed until after their nuptials. Prince William & Kate will arrive in Calgary on July 8th.
