Whitney Houston Dead at 48

"Yes it's true," Whitney Houston has passed away this afternoon, a family spokesman and publicist Kristen Foster has confirmed.  But cause of death and what time are still unknown.

UPDATE: (02-11-2011 - 7:30pm MST)
Sources tell TMZ that a member of Whitney's entourage found her in her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel ... and called hotel security -- who then dialed 911. When paramedics arrived Houston was found unresponsive.

The police then arrived to the scene within minutes and fire was already there on an unrelated call. According to TMZ sources, paramedics performed CPR but it did not work and she was pronounced dead at 3:55 PM. (pst) following a call at 3:43pm (pst) by Hotel security.

Bobby Brown has had no official comment on the death of Houston. But a source tells People Magazine that Brown learned the news about his ex-wife while in Memphis, where he is currently located for a New Edition concert. He is "shattered and beyond devastated," says the source.  And a relative of Houston that spoke to Brown also told the magazine that "he was sobbing".

UPDATE: (02-11-2011 - 8:00pm MST)
Whitney Houston "partied heavily" last night at the Beverly Hilton hotel with a group of friends ... hotel staff tell TMZ.  Whitney and her friends were in the bar for a time and the group was drinking and very loud. Sources say even though the hotel is busy with all the Grammy festivities, Whitney and her group stood out because they were so boisterous.  Again it is still unknow what caused the death of Houston.

Houston was suppose to preform at Clive Davis's Grammy Party  at the Beverly Hilton hotel tonight.  The party is going as planned but with out Davis in attendance.  Sources say he is being comforted by friends at his LA home.  Whitney was suppose to open the event.

UPDATE: (02-12-2011 - 1:00am MST)
No illegal drugs have been found in the hotel room where Whitney Houston died -- at least not yet -- but prescription drugs were present, and it's possible the singer drowned in the bathtub ... TMZ has learned.

TMZ sources also state ... when EMTs arrived Whitney's body was already removed from the bathtub so it will take an autopsy to determine if she OD'd, drowned or died from some other cause.

Whitney Houston's family was told by L.A. County Coroner officials ... the singer did not die from drowning, but rather from what appears to be a combination of Xanax and other prescription drugs mixed with alcohol ... this according to family sources.

UPDATE: (02-13-2011 - 8:00am MST)
TMZ reports that the Coroner's officials informed Whitney's family that there was not enough water in her lungs to lead to the conclusion that she drowned, but rather from what appears to be a combination of Xanax and other prescription drugs mixed with alcohol ... this according to family sources.

The family was also told Whitney may well have died before her head became submerged.

And family sources say ... it was actually Whitney's aunt, Mary Jones, who discovered Whitney's body in the bathtub. Mary had laid out Whitney's dress for the evening on the bed and then left for about a half hour. When Whitney didn't come out of the bathroom, Mary entered, pulled Whitney out of the tub and began administering CPR.

Whitney's mom has arranged to have the singer's body flown back to Atlanta, as early as tomorrow. The family was told the Coroner has no problem releasing the body because there is no evidence of foul play.

Whitney was last seen out Thursday night at a pre Grammy Party celebrating R&B music by Kelly Price and Friends.  Some witnesses at the part say Whitney didn't look well at all.  And she even preformed on stage for a short minute with Kelly Price.  Check out the picture and video below.

Houston, who struggled with addiction problems over the years, has sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos over her career.  Her popularity soared in the 1980s and 1990s with consecutive No. 1 hits including the smash single "I Will Always Love You," from the soundtrack of the feature film "The Bodyguard," in which she starred. The soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy for Album of the Year.

But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.

It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, Whitney Houston will be missed.  Check out a few highlights of Whitney Houston's career below.
