The official kick-off to the 100th Anniversary - 2012 Calgary Stampede & Exhibition begins this Friday July 6th. And if you are attending the parade in the heart of downtown, these are the times you should be aware of.
- 7:30 a.m - Road Closures take into effect. Driving across the downtown core is limited.
- 8:00 a.m - Prelude entertainment begins along the parade route which includes clown acts, musical entertainment, and mascots. The Parade Prelude purpose is to entertain those that attended early to stake out a spot on the parade route.
- 9:05 a.m. - The main Parade begins at the start of the parade route on 6th Ave SE. and then reaches the Calgary Tower on 9th Ave S.W. around 9:30 a.m. where it will be broadcast live on CBC beginning @ 9:00 am.. Jann Arden & Ron MacLean will be providing the commentary for the Centennial Parade. CBC will broadcast the parade to a regional & national audience of two-million viewers...so smile Calgary! Please note, the parade will begin at different times along the route.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PARADE:
- The Parade Marshal is Ian Tyson - Canada's own legendary Country Artist. Ian Tyson will be joined by seven honorary Parade Marshals, extraordinary leaders from the Treaty Seven Nations: Chief Charles Weasel Head, Chief Fred Rabbit Carrier, Chief Gayle Strikes With A Gun, Chief Sanford Big Plume, Chief Bruce Labelle, Chief Ernest Wesley and Chief Darcy Dixon.
First Nations have played a prominent role in the Calgary Stampede since 1912, when 1,800 members of the Treaty Seven led the Parade at the request of Stampede visionary, Guy Weadick. - There are about 123 entrants this year, over 4000 people taking part, and showcasing over 700 horses.
